Circular renovation parking roof Shopping Wijnegem

Wijnegem Shopping Center opened its doors in 1993. With extensions in 1997 and 2013, the surface area is now 69,000 m² with some 250 shops. On top of the centre stands the busiest parking roof in Europe: with 1,500 free parking spaces, it covers 32,500 m². Some 9 million visitors come to the shopping centre every year, 80% of whom come by car.

Customers prefer to park as close to the entrance as possible, so the roof is the most popular spot. After 25 years, the roof was in need of renovation. Apart from the fact that the roof is used very intensively, people also drive very fast. This, combined with increasingly heavy cars (such as SUVs), puts extra pressure on the roof. They wanted a new parking roof with a higher insulation value. The roof has been renovated in a circular manner.

We did not consider it necessary to renew everything, as most of the tiles were still in good condition (refuse). After cleaning (repair), we were able to place the insulation on top of each other, which meant that we only had to buy half of the insulation (reduce). Most of the tiles were simply put back on this parking roof (reuse). And the tiles that could no longer be used on the roof, mainly because of their lines, have been given a completely new life, as footpaths and driveways in the fields of a sedum plantation (repurpose).
