Integrate circularity into specifications (demolition files)

Tracimat vzw is a demolition management organisation that attests to the selective demolition process. Via an elaborate traceability system, starting with the identification and inventory of all materials in the construction to be demolished, Tracimat checks what happens to the materials that are released during the demolition and dismantling works. In doing so, they put a high degree of chain integration first in order to limit the environmental risks during demolition and dismantling work. This also prevents hazardous waste materials from spreading to the environment. And at the end of the day, purer waste streams are released that enable higher-quality recycling.

How to integrate circularity into specifications?
Within the Green Deal Circular Construction, Tracimat is investigating, together with actors across the demolition chain (building owners, design agencies, demolishers and crushers), which concrete and workable measuring items can be integrated in the different types of specifications for infrastructure that already exist for demolition projects. After all, specifications form the basis for demolition and construction projects. By including circularity in them, the circular construction economy is given a boost.

In concrete terms, Tracimat wants to investigate these issues:
- Is there a need to formulate clauses and measuring items that promote a more selective demolition of the stony fractions (demolition technique)? If so, which?
- Are there possibilities and conditions to enlarge the field of application for certain recycled aggregates? If yes, which applications and under which building regulations?
- Which materials/recycled aggregates can be re-used in a higher quality? In which applications and according to which building regulations?
- Are there any specific obstacles to the above items? If so, which?
- ...
By bringing together the input of the various actors (throughout the chain) with different insights/practical experiences, measuring points and clauses are drawn up that are workable for all parties and that can be an incentive for more selective demolition.
