Reducing wastage of furniture and white goods by working better together

The OCMW of Roeselare has 141 houses for asylum seekers. On average, there is a partial refurbishment (of furniture and white goods) every six months. A lot of materials are actually lost during this process, because:

  • As a result of difficult logistical cooperation, products are too quickly declared unsuitable for further use;
  • Products with a short lifespan that are difficult to repair are purchased;
  • residents are not familiar with the type of housing and material and consequently use it incorrectly.

With this project, we want to test how this can be done differently, better, more circularly. With a unique multilayered local partnership (with OCMW, traders, social economy...) we test the feasibility of furnishing the OCMW houses in a circular way (with, among others, as-a-service models) with furniture and white goods. We also want to extend the suitability assessment of materials within the PCSW patrimony through more repairs and structural maintenance. As a result, a large proportion of the materials that now end up on the rubbish heap too quickly will be given a longer life. At the same time, we will examine how we can strengthen the skills of the inhabitants so that the materials and appliances last longer.
