The Frans Masereel Centre in Kasterlee is an international arts centre that currently has 9 artist residences. The residences are open to individual artists (regular residences) and students of colleges and universities (school residences).
The residences are outdated, having been built in the 1970s. As a result, they do not meet current standards in terms of energy efficiency. In addition, they suffer from stability problems. Moreover, in the future Frans Masereel Centre would like to place the accommodations in a different way on the domain.
Through a design assignment, a masterplan will be made for the future new artists' residences. Within this global vision, a limited number of accommodations will then be worked out and finally realised. The residences will be designed according to the principles of change-oriented construction. Moreover, they will be built with materials with a low environmental impact.
In the longer term, the intention is to systematically replace all the existing artists' residences with new ones.
