Are you looking for a circular building material for your facade? Then a green ground-floor façade with ivy or vine is a great plan. Green walls have a positive effect on our mood and help biodiversity. In addition, they have a sound-absorbing and insulating effect. They shield buildings from overheating and rain, help lower the ambient temperature and improve air quality.
An ivy wall with evergreen ivy, for example, is a very affordable, alternative and evergreen façade finish - suitable for both new buildings and renovations. It is climatically equivalent to trees in the city but takes up less space.
So there are only advantages. And yet many people are still reluctant to allow a climbing plant to grow on their façade. They are afraid of maintenance or of the plant causing damage.
GGGreen has solutions
- KLIMOPSTOP is a patented growth control system for adhesive climbing plants developed by GGGreen. The system allows growth to be limited to its own wall and avoids growth over the roof edge. The electric boundary system is powered by an electric fence. The young shoots of ivy or vine are bounded by a protruding aluminium profile. The profile is insulated from the wall with a rubber strip. The plants can grow to a distance of 1 cm from the profile. The current through the plate is very low, with a frequency of 1.2 seconds. You pay less than 10 euros a year for the electrical consumption.
- If there are no openings in the façade, ivy can never damage a building. Do you want to be absolutely sure? Then you can let the ivy grow between the façade and a preplaced fine mesh or wire net. Peter Boogaerts of GGGreen is also looking for innovative solutions that can be produced on a large scale. To this end, he has had research carried out into the adhesion of ivy to felt textiles, with very positive results. (cf. the research by Centexbel). And he is involved in WonderWalls, the TETRA project of UAntwerpen, WTCB and PCS that wants to develop a central online knowledge platform with tools that make the advantages and differences between green façade systems transparent and measurable.
